How to Compare Cannabis Prices: Cost Per Gram and MG

How to Compare Cannabis Prices: Cost Per Gram, Cost Per MG, and Real Value

  • Use cost per gram for flower and many concentrates.
  • Use cost per milligram for edibles, tinctures, vapes, and other products with clearly labeled cannabinoid content.
  • The lowest unit price is not always the best value. Freshness, potency, format, serving size, ingredients, and how much of the product you will actually use also matter.

Comparing cannabis prices can be harder than comparing most products. One package may contain 3.5 grams of flower, while another contains 100 milligrams of THC divided among ten edibles. A vape may list its oil weight in grams and its cannabinoid content as a percentage. Looking only at the price on the menu does not tell you which option provides more for your money.

A better approach is to calculate a common unit price. Cost per gram works well when comparing products sold by weight. Cost per milligram is more helpful for products labeled with a specific amount of THC, CBD, or another cannabinoid. Once you have that number, you can consider quality, freshness, format, and your personal preferences to determine the real value.

Quick Guide to Cannabis Price Comparisons

Product Type Best Starting Measurement Basic Formula Other Factors to Check
Flower Cost per gram Price ÷ total grams Potency, terpene profile, harvest or package date, cultivation method
Edibles Cost per mg Price ÷ total labeled mg MG per piece, piece count, cannabinoid ratio, ingredients
Tinctures Cost per mg Price ÷ total labeled mg Bottle size, mg per serving, cannabinoid ratio, carrier oil
Vapes Cost per gram or estimated cost per mg Price ÷ oil weight or labeled cannabinoid mg Hardware, oil type, terpene source, cartridge size
Concentrates Cost per gram, then potency Price ÷ total grams Extract type, cannabinoid content, terpene content, consistency

How to Calculate the Cost Per Gram of Cannabis

Cost per gram is the most direct way to compare flower packages. Divide the listed price by the number of grams in the package:

Cost per gram = package price ÷ total grams

Suppose one eighth of flower contains 3.5 grams and costs $32. Divide $32 by 3.5 to get a cost of approximately $9.14 per gram. A seven-gram package priced at $52 costs approximately $7.43 per gram. The second package has the higher sticker price, but it provides more flower for each dollar spent.

This calculation is especially useful because cannabis flower may be sold in several quantities:

  • 1 gram
  • 2.83 or 3.5 grams, depending on the package and applicable Ohio measurement system
  • 5.66 or 7 grams
  • 14 grams
  • 28 grams

Our weed measurements guide provides more information about common flower quantities and how they relate to one another.

Buying a larger package often lowers the cost per gram, but it is only a better value if you will use the product while it is still in good condition. A smaller package may make more sense when trying a new cultivar or when you consume flower less frequently.

Why THC Percentage Does Not Replace Cost Per Gram

Two flower products may have the same weight but different THC percentages. That does not mean the product with the higher percentage automatically provides better value. THC content is one product characteristic, not a complete quality score.

When comparing flower, consider the cost per gram alongside:

  • THC and CBD percentages
  • Terpene content and listed aromas
  • Harvest, testing, and packaging dates
  • Cultivator and cultivation method
  • Trim quality and moisture level
  • Package size and how quickly you expect to use it

You can review our guide to reading Ohio cannabis labels to better understand potency, terpene, batch, and testing information.

How to Calculate Cost Per MG for Edibles

Edibles are usually easier to compare by milligram than by package weight. The weight of the gummy, chocolate, or beverage includes ingredients that do not indicate cannabinoid content. Instead, look for the total labeled amount of the cannabinoid you are comparing.

Cost per mg = package price ÷ total labeled milligrams

For example, consider a package of ten edibles containing 10 mg of THC each. The package contains 100 mg of THC in total. If it costs $18:

$18 ÷ 100 mg = $0.18 per mg

Now consider a $24 package containing 200 mg of total THC:

$24 ÷ 200 mg = $0.12 per mg

The $24 package costs more at checkout, but its unit price is lower. However, serving size still matters. A product divided into smaller, clearly labeled portions may be more useful to someone who prefers easier portion control, even if its cost per milligram is slightly higher.

When comparing products, make sure you are using the total milligrams in the package rather than the milligrams in one piece. A package containing ten pieces at 10 mg each has 100 total mg, not 10.

How to Compare Tincture Prices

Tincture labels may show the total amount of THC, CBD, or other cannabinoids in the bottle and the amount in each serving. Use the bottle’s total labeled cannabinoid content for a unit-price comparison.

If a tincture costs $36 and contains 500 mg of the cannabinoid you want to compare:

$36 ÷ 500 mg = $0.072 per mg

That equals approximately 7.2 cents per milligram. You can then compare that figure with another tincture containing the same cannabinoid. Do not combine THC and CBD into one total unless your goal is specifically to compare the overall cannabinoid content of products with similar ratios.

Cost per milligram does not account for bottle design, included dropper markings, carrier oil, flavoring, or the amount delivered in one serving. These details may affect how conveniently the product fits your preferences.

Comparing Vapes and Concentrates

Vapes and concentrates can be compared by gram, but potency differences may make that number incomplete. A half-gram vape and a one-gram concentrate are not equivalent simply because both are inhalable extracts.

When the product lists a THC percentage rather than total milligrams, you can estimate the THC content with this formula:

Product weight in grams × THC percentage as a decimal × 1,000 = estimated THC in mg

For example, a 0.5-gram vape labeled at 80% THC contains approximately 400 mg of THC before accounting for device performance or other losses:

0.5 × 0.80 × 1,000 = 400 mg

If the vape costs $35, its estimated cost is 8.75 cents per labeled milligram of THC. This figure describes the cannabinoid content in the product. It does not represent the amount your body will absorb.

Concentrates also differ by extraction method, texture, terpene content, and processing. Compare similar formats whenever possible. A basic cost-per-gram calculation may not fairly represent the difference between distillate, live resin, rosin, wax, and other extracts.

What “Real Value” Means When Buying Cannabis

The lowest cost per gram or milligram is useful information, but it should not make the entire decision. Real value means getting a product you understand, can use as intended, and are comfortable purchasing again.

Before choosing the lowest unit price, ask:

  • Are the products the same format and package size?
  • Am I comparing the same cannabinoid?
  • Is one product fresher or packaged more recently?
  • Does one provide clearer serving information?
  • Do the terpene profile and listed aromas match my preferences?
  • Will I use the entire package before its quality declines?
  • Does a vape require a separate battery or other accessory?
  • Is the product included in a current promotion?

A low-priced product that goes unused is not a good value. A slightly higher unit price may be reasonable when the package size, serving format, ingredients, or product information better matches what you want.

Include Specials in Your Final Calculation

Promotions can change the final cost per gram or milligram. Calculate the unit price using the amount you will actually pay after an eligible product discount, rather than the original menu price.

If a seven-gram flower package is normally $56 but is reduced to $42, its promotional cost is $6 per gram. Use the same approach with a discounted edible, tincture, vape, or concentrate.

Current offers and inventory can change, so review the UpLift specials page and location menu before making a comparison. Loyalty rewards are handled separately and may apply to eligible non-cannabis accessories and apparel rather than cannabis purchases. Review the UpLift Loyalty Rewards Program for current details.

Compare Cannabis Prices at UpLift

You do not need to perform every calculation while standing at the counter. Start by deciding which product format and cannabinoid you want to compare. Then check package size, total cannabinoid content, serving information, and final price.

Browse the current Milford cannabis menu or Mt. Orab cannabis menu to compare available products. If two options still seem difficult to evaluate, ask an UpLift team member to help you review the label, package size, potency, and price.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you calculate the cost per gram of cannabis?

Divide the product’s price by its total weight in grams. A 3.5-gram package priced at $32 costs approximately $9.14 per gram.

How do you calculate the cost per milligram of THC?

Divide the package price by the total labeled milligrams of THC. A $20 package containing 100 mg of THC costs $0.20 per mg.

Should flower be compared by cost per gram or cost per mg?

Cost per gram is usually the more practical starting point for flower. THC percentage, terpene content, freshness, and cultivation details can then help you compare products with similar weights.

Does the lowest cost per mg mean the best cannabis value?

No. Cost per mg measures cannabinoid quantity for the price, but it does not account for freshness, ingredients, serving size, format, product quality, or whether the package suits your preferences.
