What to Bring to an Ohio Dispensary for Your First Visit

Walking into a dispensary for the first time can feel a little intimidating, especially if you’re not sure what’s in your wallet or on your mind. Once you know the basics, it’s a pretty quick process. Before your trip, feel free to explore current specials so you know what’s available before you even walk through the door.

Whether you’re stopping by our Milford dispensary or heading to Mt. Orab, our process is built to be quick and welcoming for newcomers and regulars alike. Knowing the basics of ID requirements, payment options, and what to expect at check-in removes most of the guesswork. We want you to feel comfortable asking questions, not rushed through a transaction.

Who Can Shop at UpLift: Ohio Age and ID Requirements

Adult-use cannabis is legal in Ohio for anyone 21 and older, medical card or not. That said, the rules differ slightly depending on whether you’re shopping as an adult-use consumer or a registered medical patient.

Valid Government-Issued Photo ID

Adult-use customers must be 21 or older and present a valid government-issued photo ID. A driver’s license or state ID is standard, but a valid passport works too, and so does a military ID. Out-of-state visitors are welcome to purchase, since both Ohio residents and out-of-state guests can legally buy and possess cannabis here.

Your ID needs to be a physical, unexpired document. Some dispensaries won’t accept a digital photo of your license, so don’t rely on a picture saved to your phone as a backup.

Medical Patients: Ohio Medical Marijuana Card

Ohio runs a medical marijuana program with real advantages. To purchase for themselves, medical patients must be at least 18 and present a valid Ohio Medical Marijuana Control Program registry card along with their government-issued photo ID. Registered patients under 18 can participate in the program, but a designated caregiver has to make the purchase on their behalf. Ohio doesn’t offer reciprocity for out-of-state medical cards, so visiting patients from other states will need to shop under adult-use rules instead.

If you’re a caregiver picking up for a registered patient, you can do so as their designated primary caregiver, but you’ll still need proper documentation. Getting registered is easier than it used to be: see a certified physician, establish a bona fide relationship, get entered into the registry, then complete your registration online and pay the fee.

As of March 4, 2024, that registry fee dropped from $50 to a single penny for patients, and from $25 to a penny for caregivers, making medical registration far more accessible for Ohio patients. Keep in mind the registry fee is separate from what your certifying physician charges for the appointment.

What to Bring With You

Three things get you through a dispensary purchase: your ID, a working payment method, and a general sense of what you’re after.

ID and Payment Method

Your ID is non-negotiable, and so is having a payment method that actually works at the counter. We’ll cover payment specifics shortly, but plan on cash or debit rather than a credit card.

A Product List or Budget in Mind

Walking in with a general idea of what you want, whether that’s a category like flower or edibles, or simply a spending limit, makes for a faster, less overwhelming visit. You don’t need exact product names. A budtender can help fill in the details once you’re there.

Any Questions You Want Answered

Jot down anything you’re curious about, whether it’s how a product is consumed, what to expect from different forms, or how potency works. There’s no such thing as a silly question, and asking upfront is one of the best ways to avoid regret later.

First-Visit Checklist:

• A driver’s license, state ID, passport, or military ID works, as long as it’s valid and government-issued.

• Medical patients need their Ohio MMCP registry card too.

• Bring cash or a debit card since credit typically won’t work.

• Have a rough idea of what you want or a spending limit in mind.

• Write down any questions for your budtender ahead of time.

• If you ordered online, bring your confirmation.

Payment Options: Debit, Cashless ATM, and Cash

Traditional credit cards generally aren’t accepted at Ohio dispensaries, which trips up a lot of first-timers. Instead, plan to use one of the following:

• Cash, commonly accepted at most locations.

• PIN Debit, which deducts the exact purchase amount from your account.

• Point of Banking (also called cashless ATM), which rounds your total up to the nearest $5 or $10 (occasionally $1) and gives you cash change back.

• ACH pay-by-bank or other approved payment apps, depending on the store.

Onsite ATMs are typically available if you need to grab cash before checking out. Since payment methods can vary by location, it’s worth calling ahead to confirm what a specific dispensary accepts before you go.

Ordering Ahead: Browsing the Menu Online

If you’d rather skip the guesswork entirely, ordering ahead is a smart move. Our online store opens each night after doors close, so you can browse the full menu, place your order, and pick it up the next day. Browse the online menu, place your order, bring your government-issued ID (plus your medical card if applicable), get in the pickup line, and pay at the counter when you arrive. You’ll get a confirmation by email or text once your order is ready.

Medical patients ordering online will need to set up an account with their name, birthdate, phone number, and medical card information ahead of time. It’s a small step now that saves time later. Take a look at our current specials before you place your order to see what’s on the shelves this week.

What to Expect When You Arrive

Arriving at the dispensary is a lot less formal than people expect. It’s less airport security, more quick check-in.

Check-In and ID Verification

Staff will greet you and verify your ID, sometimes twice, since it’s required by law and helps keep the process compliant. This step is brief and shouldn’t hold up your visit for long.

Talking With a Budtender

Once you’re checked in, a budtender will help you compare products based on what you’re looking for and how you prefer to consume. They’re there to educate, not to pressure you into a purchase, and they can’t offer medical advice, but they know their inventory inside and out. Mentioning that it’s your first visit tends to slow budtenders down a bit, and they’ll usually offer more guidance once they know you’re new, which makes the whole experience feel less overwhelming.

Understanding Ohio Purchase Limits

Purchase limits are tracked in real time through Metrc, the state’s tracking system, so everything you buy across all Ohio dispensaries counts toward the same daily total. For adult-use customers, the daily limit is up to 2.5 ounces of flower, plus up to 15,000 milligrams of total THC across everything else, meaning edibles, vapes, tinctures, and concentrates. Both limits run alongside each other and reset each calendar day.

Medical patients get more flexibility, since registered patients can buy up to four days’ supply in a single visit instead of one day at a time. Caregivers are still held to the one-day amount. The DCC updated these limits on March 24, 2026, so it’s worth confirming current numbers before your visit.

Two other rules are worth knowing. Under Senate Bill 56, extracts are capped at 70 percent THC and flower at 35 percent. And only cannabis bought from a licensed Ohio dispensary or legally home-grown is lawful to possess here, so bringing product in from another state is a criminal offense even if you purchased it legally there.

Common First-Visit Mistakes to Avoid

A little awareness here saves a lot of hassle later. Common missteps include:

• Forgetting your ID or bringing an expired medical card, which means you won’t be able to complete your purchase.

• Assuming credit cards work, when in most cases they don’t.

• Taking too much too soon with edibles, which often take longer to kick in than people expect and lead to overdoing it before the effects even hit.

• Not asking questions when something’s unclear, since budtenders are there to help.

• Expecting instant effects, which vary by product and person.

• Not respecting other customers’ privacy while you’re in the store.

• Driving under the influence, which is never worth the risk.

• Consuming cannabis in public, since Ohio law now restricts legal consumption to private residential property or agricultural land, with public use treated as a minor misdemeanor that can carry a fine.

Remember the phrase “start low, go slow.” It applies to nearly every new product, especially edibles, and it’s one of the simplest ways to have a more comfortable first experience.
